A Friendswood Officer shot an alleged shoplifter yesterday afternoon near the Public Library.
The suspect, who remains unnamed pending notification of family, was initially reported by a Shell Station clerk after stealing a beer from the convenience store at the corner of FM2351 and Friendswood Drive.
An officer caught up to the suspect less than a mile away as he was walking south on Friendswood Drive. The situation rapidly escalated when the man revealed he was armed with a box cutter. Witness accounts vary with some saying the officer fired as many as eight shots in self defense. Details of the incident are currently under investigation by the department in conjunction with the Galveston County District Attorney’s Office.
The suspect, described as a white male, 45-60 years of age, was rushed to a local hospital where he later died.
The Friendswood Police Department equipped it’s officers with body cams earlier this year.
